Each year Lake Baikal is covered by a thick layer of ice. At the beginning of winter (December), storms form types of stalactites and stalagmites on the rivers, some reaching as much as 10 meters. As the temperatures decrease further and the snow comes, these ice formations, "choulga" begin to join together on the lake to create large plates. In certain areas, water is frozen so quickly by the cold that the ice it forms is absolutely smooth and transparent. Once temperatures drop below -20'C, for 3 or 4 days, the sea ice thickens very quickly, from 5 to 7 cm per day. During the first half of the month of January, the sea ice covers the lake. From the North to the South the thickness varies between 70 and 130cms. The ice blocks can obtain a height of 3 meters and in some instances as much as 5 meters. Taltsy museum of wooden architecture This March I was honored and pleased to organize and quide a group of close friends from Germany and Australia, very positive, extraordinary, creative and kindest people. The weather during the trip was bright and sunny, as we say: "For good people - good weather". We had cold and warm days, some were wearing up to 15 pieces of clothes not to get frozen, had frosty strong wind blowing in our faces and gentle warm sun which nobody believes we have in Siberia. Thank you, Baikal, and thank God, and thank all the people who made tris trip possible and unforgettable for all of us. To get to the biggest island on Baikal - Olkhon in winter you have to take an ice-road from the mainland. It usually goes from one of the bays of the Small sea of Baikal. Now the thickness of ice on Lake Baikal in a place where usually ice crossing is opened does not exceed 45 cm. For the road to be officially opened and equipped for travelling ice thickness of  not less than 70 cm is needed.  If the temperature stays at the current level (about -20 degrees Celsius) during another 2 weeks, crossing will be opened for cars with a total mass not exceeding 10 tonnes. The ice crossing to Olkhon operates until about mid-April, its length is about 12 km.

The horse-riding tour on the biggest island of Baikal lake - Olkhon lasted for 4 days for 4 of us. Three young energetic Australians, two ladies - Cassandra and Victoria and one man - Justin, arrived early in the morning on the 16th of July and headed straight to Olkhon. You don't need to be specially trained for this tour, it is also nice for family tour at Baikal. The ferry was quite busy as it is a high season, so even the advantage of public buses which usually go first didn't help much and we got lucky only with the 3rd ferry. Thus we arrived to Khuzhir only by 5pm as we had been admiring the lake, the birds and near-by surroundings of the MRS village waiting for the ferry for about 2 hours. Beautiful views of blossoming meadows and good food on the way. I am kinda seasick. I miss summer and Baikal. I know it is coming, but still... It took me almost a year to make a video after our last trip to Olkhon. We went there last summer. I had the files stored in my comouter and never found time to put them all together, until last night. SO here it is, a short sketch about our 2-days trip to Olkhon - the biggest island on Baikal lake.
