Russian hand-made doll (Krupenichka)

Krupenichka is a Slavic baby doll that attracts wealth and wealth to the house. Its main symbol is grain ("croupa" in Russian), which means a good harvest and profit. Krupenichka traditionally had no face, as well as other ritual dolls in Russia.

Below you may find hand-crafted Russian Krupenichka-dolls made by me.

Krupenichka is a doll with a special meaning. It was usually given for Christmas, Kolyada and holidays associated with the harvest. Such a doll was made of cloth, grain was stuffed into it, as a rule, wheat, buckwheat or several kinds of grain at once, so that the crop would be rich simultaneously for all kinds of grain.

While making a doll, women read a prayer or sing songs. In Russia, porridge was very important, as it was mainly eaten, because porridge (any) has a lot of energy and is easily assimilated.

Zernushka (or Krupenichka) is the main amulet in the family, she lures the house well-being and prosperity, and promises a good harvest and an addition in the family.

The grain-doll was made after the first harvest, it was stuffed with selected grain, and placed near the icons for a whole year, and the next year it was disassembled and refilled with a new selected grain.

During the famine, when the grain was ending,  the grain-doll was opened and grain was used as food. The family's guest on this doll could determine how satisfied the family is, if the doll is full, then everything is fine with the food in the family, and if the doll is thin, then the family is in trouble.

Each type of grain had its own meaning. For example, rice was the most expensive, therefore it symbolized wealth, pearl barley - satiety, buckwheat - prosperity, and oats - strength. Before sowing a handful of grain was taken from a doll, and after harvesting it was filled with fresh grains.
In ancient times, dolls were defenders and served as amulets from evil. They were made without needles and scissors. The material was not cut, but tored. Puppets so sometimes called: "rvanki". In their family there were always a lot: the more, the happier. One of these dolls is Krupenichka.

The legend of the appearance of the grain-doll is as follows: a beautiful girl lived by herself, she was called Krupenichka. According to some rumors, the rich man wanted to marry her, on the other  version - the Tatar khan, but the girl fled and turned into a tiny seed, it sprouted, and on the ground a plant appeared - buckwheat. Therefore, the doll Zernovushka is filled with buckwheat and other cereals for good and well-being. Grains are used selective, such that one could use for sowing.

Such grain-doll was given to daughters before the wedding, so that the marriage would be successful. Sons were given this doll when they went to serve in the army. The men kept Krupenichka on the road. If they wanted to become pregnant, they put the doll in the cradle, and when the child showed up, they left it with the newborn so that the child could grow up playing with it.

When travelling with "Baikal-amikan" travel company, we present "Krupenichka" Russian hand-made dolls to our guests. We hope this would be a nice souvenir as a memory of visiting Russia and as an amulet for wealth, good hope, and prosperity. All of our dolls are hand-made by us.

Reindeer herders of Northern Baikal lake

With reindeer of Northern Baikal
On the North of Baikal lake, in the highlands of Verkhnelenskiy mountain range there is a reindeer farm. This remoted place has preserved old unique culture, lifestyle of Evenki people - the native people of Siberia. They are called "Deer people" as reindeer breeding, hunting and fishing used to be their main activity. I was lucky to meet these people myself this June 2017. We stayed and travelled together for 5 days in dense untouched taiga and tundra. We have met no other people during all that time except for the Evenki who live there and watch for the reindeer.

A little piece from my notes which I made during my stay: "This trip is adventure of the lifetime. I still remember clearly the valley where our deer were eating the moss, the place where we set up our Chum, the meadows of the wild flowers and Rhododendron blossoming, the fresh footprints of bear on our path, the grace and mighty of this huge wild animal chasing away up the nearest slope, the sunrises in the montains and the most freindly animals in the world - reindeer with their warm soft fur on their antlers. It was joy leading the caravan of reindeer when we crossed tundra, to see how patient and hardworking they are and how grateful they are after I took them to the mountain river to drink the clear cold water after exhausting day! And the beauty of nature around and the views are fascinating! The place where Evenki people live, the nature around, the animals they breed - this is a beautiful boarder-less home! I am not brave enough to say "Good-bye" to this place. I will definately be back!"

Trekking to North of Baikal mountains with reindeer
I would like to offer a similar trip for real enthusiasts who would like to get familiar with traditions and lifestyle of the native people of Siberia – Evenki. For more details and booking, please, visit a web-site. They still migrate from summer to winter camps in the mountain valleys and well adapted to harsh conditions of the North. One of the clans of Northern Baikal called Chilchigiry used to live in the valley of Upper Angara river mostly engaged in hunting, fishing, and reindeer breeding.
From the 30s of the last century till the end of the Soviet Union in the village of Uoyan there was a large reindeer herding collective farm in which the deer population reached 800. The collective farm has collapsed, but there were people, some of whom were engaged in the revival of their ancestors. They are real enthusiasts who, in conditions of lack of money, recreate the culture and crafts of the people little by little.

Evenki live in nature, eat natural food, wear natural clothes, and getting there you become participants of a “real life”.

In the proposed tour, we will try to preserve the normal lifestyle of Evenkis as much as possible and give the participants of the expedition the opportunity to participate on an equal level in all daily matters. So get your backpack packed and travel into the wilderness to discover yourself! Below you will find a draft summer itinerary. It may be changed according to your demands and season.

We will cross the river several times by wooden bridges. The route is very picturesque: skin flowers, green slopes, crystal-clear running water near-by. After a while, we’ll get to the Alpine meadows – usually flowering all summer period. Then the trail will bring us to the mountain rib above forest zone, where we will continue hiking to the summit of peak Cherskogo (2090 m) – highest mount of this area. The From the summit you can observe the southern extremity of Baikal Lake and Lake Heart (it has the shape of heart). It is believed that if you come here with the person you like, it will make your love stronger. On a clear day you can see even rocky Sayan mountains on the horizontal line. Returning back to the meteostation or a campsite. Banya. Overnight: Wooden house. Total trek distance for this day is 20 km. (B, L, D).

Day 13. (05.08.17). Visiting the cascade of waterfalls. Banya

The route goes through the forest, sometimes on the boulders (fallen stones), over the slopes. In June this place is all covered with a carpet of light yellow flowers, sometimes with wild garlic. Lunch will be prepared for you near one of the waterfalls. Enjoy swimming in the sparkling waterfalls on a hot day. It is refreshing and energizing! Returning back to the camp. Dinner, resting time. In autumn it is a luxury place for berry lovers. You may lay down in the meadow and eat the berries right in front of you. It is mostly sweet blueberries and mountain cranberries. Foreign tourists love making compote with these gifts of nature and herbs. Banya in the evening. Overnight: Tent camp/Wooden house. Total trek distance for this day is 15 km. (B, L, D).

Day 14. (06.08.17). Trekking back to Slyudyanka village. Night train Sludyanka – Ulan-Ude

Today in the morning after breakfast we will pick up all our camping equipment and start hiking down to Sludjanka city. Usually it takes about 6-7 hours to go back. The way back is always easier and seems shorter. Lunch will be prepared for you on the route. After you arrive to Sludyanka you will have some rest and may visit the local museum of minerals. Dinner in any cafe on your choice. At about 11pm you will board on Transsiberian train Sludyanka – Ulan Ude. Night in train. Once full compartment. (B, L,  D).
