Baikal trekking and horse-riding, boat to Oust-Barguzin in Charming Baikal tour

Baikal is becoming more and more popular among tourists. There are more hotels and tourist bases built up, more routes available. People come here to feel the majesty of Baikal, to be alone in nature. How many times can you say: "Beautiful, amazing, stunning, breathtaking, vast, inspiring....? It still won't capture the feeling of it all. Baikal's territory is huge.  And it's really spectacular. Most of it is a National park zone. There are still little nooks and cozy bays which seem untouched as there are no roads for cars to reach. We want to offer you to find such places with quiet private bays where you may pause, relax and enjoy yourselves and nature around. This tour was tailor-made spacially for those who value calm remote places away from hotels and toursitic places.  2 days horse-riding at Baikal along the shorelibe and forest, trekking Baikal shore visiting the magnificent cliffs and mysterious rock drawings, overnights in little bays with nobody around, a car ride in Tageran steppes to visit the valley of stone spirits, Olkhon island sights with trekking to the highest wild mountain there, a boat ride to the opposite shore of Baikal to Oust-Barguzin, to explore the trail of the highest plateau of Holy nose peninsula and swim in warm waters of the biggest bay on Baikal - Chivirkuiskiy gulf, possible visit to Ushkaniy islands to see Baikal seals,  ride to "Little Mongolia" - Barguzin valley and kayak along the river, to visit Buddhist temple - datsan in Ivolginsk. We may shorten the program for you depending on your time available. Short itinerary is like this:
Day 1. Transfer Irkutsk – Buguldeika village, overnight. Meeting at the airport with your guide. Transfer to Buguldeika village which is on the shore of Baikal (230 km to go, about 3.5 hours drive). On the way visiting the white marble quarry. Arrival to "Zarechnoye" stead, accommodation. Lunch. Meeting with horses. Brief safety instructions. Introductory lesson in riding in the field. Rest. Possible to walk to the shore of Lake Baikal or Mishkin mountain. Dinner. Overnight. (-, L, D).

Day 2 .Start of horse-riding tour to Baikal shore northwardsLate breakfast. Packing and loading the horses, start of the trip. The path runs mostly along forest and country roads and on the tops of ridges with magnificent views of lake Baikal. Sometimes, for security reasons of you and your horse, you may need to dismount on particularly steep climbs and descents. Upon arrival to the site we’ll set up a tent camp and a hot dinner will be cooked for you on fire. Prepare horses for the night. Overnight in tents. (B, L, D).

Day 3. Continue horse-riding trip along Baikal to Marta bay. Early rise. Breakfast. Watering horses from Baikal. Today we continue horse-riding to Baikal. The road also runs through the taiga roads. The distance depends on your condition and experience. Once we reach a nice cozy bay we’ll stop for overnight. Dinner. Overnight in tents. (B, L, D).

Day 4. Trekking along the shoreline of Baikal. In the morning we’ll pack our camping equipment and load it to the car and take only light backpacks for the day. Trekking northwards. At some point the trekking route leaves shore line and runs through the plateau next to Baikal Lake. The trail goes along a forest road to the several salt lakes in steppe. Continue trekking down the valley to the Baikal Lake where we will reach Khairyuzovaya bay. Setting the tent camp. Overnight in tent. (B, L, D).

Day 5. Exploring Sagan-Zaba bay. After breakfast you will ascent a gorgeous cliff from top of which a wonderful panoramic view of Lake Baikal opens up. After a short stop for taking pictures you will descend this cliff by the steep slope and reach Sagan-Zaba bay. At the language of native people it means White Rock and this place for hundreds of years has been sacred for locals. In this bay there is a white-marble cliff on which you can find ancient inscriptions (drawings) of dancing shamans with horns, deer and birds. Your guide can also show you around and visit the small cave near by. Return to the camp, overnight in tents. (B, L, D).

Day 6. Trekking Sagan-Zaba – Aya bay. After breakfast you’ll continue your trip to Birhit bay. Stop for lunch near a beautiful creak. Continue your trip to the valley of the Anga River. Near the river‘s delta you will undertake an easy ascend to the Shibite Mountain top that used to serve as an observation platform and light signal spot. From here there is a fantastic view over surroundings. Around a top of this mountain you can find ancient stone-made walls. Scientists have found that this mountain was a sacred place for locals many years ago.
After that we will cross Anga River by bridge and hike to the campsite, which is located at the top of the rocky cliff with a marvelous panoramic view to Baikal Lake. There is a beautiful arch near-by – a natural sight. If you wish your guide can also show you the cave. (B, L, D).

Day 7. Tageran steppe and transfer to Olkhon island. After breakfast you’ll ride by car (with optional walk) through Tageran steppe, visiting the valley of Stone Spirits. There is a big number of different funny shaped rocks standing at the middle of plateau of Tageran steppe. Local legend says that they are ancient warriors, turned into a stone by the main spirit of this area. Possible ascending the Khan-Tan mount. Transfer to the ferry, crossing Olkhon’s Gate strait, transfer by car to Khuzhir village, accommodation in guest house. (B, L, D).

Day 8. UAZ excursion to the northernmost of Olkhon island - Khoboy. Trekking on Olkhon from Khoboy - Uzury. Today you’ll visit the most picturesque sights of Olkhon island as you are going to excursion to the northern part – Khoboy cape. The best transport on Olkhon is Russian 4WD – UAZ car, as it is optimal for off road in the forest. Before you reach Khoboy you’ll have several stops on the way to admire the beauty of local landscape. Khoboy Cape (from Buryat language it means “fang, tooth”) – is the most northern point of Olkhon Island. It is spectacular rock which is located near the widest place at Baikal – 79,5 km. At clear weather it is possible to see the opposite shore, rocky outline of Saint Nose Peninsula. This place is also considered as one of the most energy places on Olkhon, as Big and Small Baikal seas meet here. Lunch will be served for you as a picnic in the forest. You’ll try a fish soup made from Baikal water and local fish – Omul. If you wish you can have easy trekking from Khoboy to Uzury valley (the car will bring your things to Uzury). The trek is mostly along the shore high above the water. Uzury is one of not many exits to Baikal on the eastern shore as it is very steep and rocky. For Buryat people Olkhon island is geographical center of ethnical Buryat territory, it is a sacral center. Still once every 4 years Shamans gather on the island and perform their rituals. Day 9. Trekking Olkhon to the highest mount-Zhima. This day you will go trekking to marvellous place on Olkhon which is wild and very impressive - to Zhima mountain (1247m). This place is about 10 km away from the deepest place on the planet. It is considered sacred among local people - Buryats. This  trekking up is quite tough but the view from the top is impressive. There you may have a rest and enjoy silence of nature around and the majesty of Baikal. You will be dropped by boats to the nearest valley and picked up in the evening. return to Uzury, possible Banya. In summer there are usually horses in Uzury so you may also go horse-riding if you have time. Overnight. (B, L, D).

Day 10. Transfer Uzury – Khuzhir, biking on Olkhon, boat ride to Oust-Barguzin. In the first half of the day you will have transfer to Khuzhir, rent mountain bikes and go biking. Biking on Olkhon is perfect as there is usually fresh wind from Baikal, always changing landscapes of steppes, flowers fields, forests. At 17.00 you have to catch a boat from Khuzhir to Oust-Barguzin. It will stop next to Burkhan rock which is right at the shore of Baikal. According to a legend this is a castle of the main spirit of Olkhon. It is one of 9 sanctuarities of Asia, center of shaman cult. It is highly respected among native people and shamans. Your guide will stay on Olkhon. Arrival to Oust-Barguzin at about 20.30, accommodation in guest house, dinner. (B, L, D).

Day 11. Excursion to Chivirkuiskiy bay. Travel to the most beautiful bay of Lake Baikal - Chivirkuiskiy bay. White sand beaches, 7 islands,  natural hot springs, warm water in the bay make this the most popular tour. You will go across the isthmus of St. nose peninsula by car to the water transport in the area of Monakhovo. You'll admire for a few hours the ever-changing landscape of Baikal while being on a boat. During the tour it is possible to have a walk on the hiking trail through the taiga, along the coast, lasting from one to three hours. Also it is possible to visit Ushkaniy islands to see Baikal freshwater seals. (Must have a special permission to visit this protected territory). Return to Oust Barguzin. Duration: about 8 hours. Day 12. Two day excursion to Barguzin valley. The little Mongolia. In 50 km from Baikal there are expanses of the river Barguzin. According to the legend, this is Genghis Khan's mother's homeland, with its numerous monuments of nature and archeology. Rock paintings of 3000 years ago, the rock garden area of 10 km2 and the salt lake and majestic rock outcrops. Bull - stone is a sacred place among Barguzin Buryat people. You will have a ride by car in northern steppes of Asia, which gives a sharp contrast with Baikal nature, visiting the village of Barguzin, the first Russian settlement beyond Baikal. On the first day you will ride on one side of the river valley, spend the night in tents, and on the second day ride on the opposite side of the valley. There is a possibility to kayak some part of the route along Barguzin river. (must be discussed in advance). Return to Oust-Barguzin. (B, L, D).

Day 14. Excursion to Saint nose peninsula – trekking to the highest plateau. This day you will have trekking in the mountains of the largest peninsula on Lake Baikal.
Journey to the Trans-Baikal National Park. By car you will drive through the isthmus of the peninsula of St. nose, along the sandy beaches of the largest bay of Lake Baikal - Barguzinsky to conquer the top of the Saint Nose Peninsula, where the maximum height of 1877 m. Holy Nose - the only major mountainous peninsula on Lake BaikalBuryat name of the peninsula is "Hillman Khushun" which means "face (nose) of sturgeon." Vegetation changes as you will rise to the top. Tall trees are replaced by the diminutive elfin cedar. On the plateau of the peninsula there si the alpine tundra zone, where there are no water sources. For this reason on the terrain of Glinka, it was called "trail of tests." Ascent is suitable for two categories of people, if it is very difficult to go to the top, you can only reach the edge of the forest, overlooking the magnificent panorama of the two biggest Bays of Lake Baikal and Arangatuy lake. This place is called "By the Cross". At the top of the peninsula there is a plateau and which opens with a much broader view. In good weather you can see the archipelago of Ushkaniye islands and distant objects of more than 100 kilometers. Holy Nose - a place of pilgrimage for lovers of hiking, climbing on the plateau of St. nose and the return takes the whole day and requires considerable effort, but it is worth seeing!!! Return to Oust-Barguzin. (B, L, D).

Day 15. Transfer Oust-Barguzin – Ulan-Ude. Visiting Buddhist temple in Ivolginsk. After breakfast we 'll have transfer to Ulan-Ude, the capital of Buryatia. 30 km away from Ulan-Ude there is one of the biggest Buddhist temples - Ivolginsky datsan, a spiritual center of Buddhism in Russia. The excursion to the temple will take 2,5-3 hours. After getting so much for your soul its time to get some for body. We have dinner in cafe tasting traditional cuisine. return to Ulan-Ude. Watch beautiful Ulan-Ude spreading downhill. In the evening we have farewell dinner in the restaurant of national Buryat cuisine and a walk in gloaming city. (B, L, D).
